Hi Radish...

You are absolutely right!

It doesn't make sense - if you only need 1 remote. But I have kids and
the remotes are constantly hitting the floor. I find my self "easier to
live with" now that I can replace broken remotes for $30 or less (i.e.
wait until they are on sale!). Plus, once you develop a configuration
you like for your particular situation, re-programming a new remote of
the same type takes seconds.

Things to look out for:
1) There are 2 types of JP1 remotes, most anything you buy now will be
the newer type.
2) The JP1 connector (an array of 2x3 0.1" spaced pins) is usually found
under the battery case cover. But some remotes do not have this
populated. Try to check before buying or ask in the JP1 forums.
3) I have never found a "guy behind the counter" that knew beans about
this stuff. So don't be surprised by the blank look you might get if
you ask.
4) The JP1 web site has files for many remotes and many remote
controlled appliances. The trick is to merge these files together into
something useful for you. Once you have done this, you should stick to
that particular remote.

...have fun
