It has stayed in sync for a nearly a whole day now. I have been doing some reading up on VMs and time keeping is a known problem. They tend to drop interrupts and hence the time can drift, the recommendation seems to be to ensure they sync with a time server regularly (which I have done now). My SB2 had lost quite a lot of time relative to the server (~20s) and if it only goes forward in 5ms steps that might explain why it never caught up. In an early post you will see I thought the 7.3 upgrade fixed it, I suspect it was actually the fact that 7.3 upgraded the SB2 firmware and hence it did a resync.
I appreciate that I might be in a minority by using a VM but would it be possible to allow the SB to reset its time at other times, for example at power on?
