Ah, I was poking around with the controller but did not see the ability to do that. Just looking now and it says the current song is 128kbps CBR WMA.
Hmm... Ya the sound was immediately "muddy". I think they stream WMA here so 32kbps WMA is better than 32kbps with mp3, but still. Anything with any bass or noise (I tend towards metal and industrial) sounds like poo. Napster got back to me and said they do 'up to 128kbps depending on the internet connection'.
