It sounds like you already have the player in place, and you just want to transport to the kitchen. Unless I am mistaken, you might not want to go to squeezeboxes. This one is equivalent to the apple products in that you can control your PC. However to transport wirelessly to another place without the option of control, even than functionality is wasted. There are plenty of generic alternatives. I've only seen one in operation (a generic brand chines one) and the sound quality seemed perfectly satisfactory (not using good equipment at the other end).
