Sonos makes some great stuff be remember the squeezebox open architecture is what makes it so great. If you don't like it you can change it!
That being said Sonos supports the full UPnP spec so you can control it with UPnP commands. I just added the open source Sonosweb interface to VortexBox so you can have a web interface for your Sonos box.
