Dean,

Congrats and best wishes for the future. Thank you for your
contributions to such a great product line. Sean's good bye to the forum
was disappointing,  for his failure to publicly acknowledge all the
great co-workers who helped him make it happen. I hope that you pass
along (and you probably already have) your thanks to them in an
appropriate way.

I can tell you from my own travels and far flung acquaintances that
basements seem to be pretty common in the midwestern and eastern US.
They're not common in California, and are usually found only in old(er)
houses. Dean's header says he lives in SF, so for sure there are many
older houses with basements up there. For houses built in the last 60
years (which I believe is the majority of existing structures in the
state), a basement is pretty rare, with the exception of very upscale
structures that purposefully have wine cellars.
