>From the Wiki: In telecommunications, bit rate or data transfer rate is
the average number of bits, characters, or blocks per unit time passing
between equipment in a data transmission system. This is typically
measured in multiples of the units bit per second or byte per second.

So the higher the rate shown should translate to a higher quality audio
stream (of course that does not account for how well it was recorded in
the first place). So in other words if the exact same recording is
streamed at 24 Kbps and 64 Kbps on another channel, I would prefer to
listen to the 64 Kbps.

I could probably stand listening to Talk Radio at 24 Kbps for a little
while. Music audio minimum for me is 128 Kbps which I can take for a
little while. 192 is better and 256 Kbps even better, I can listen for
much longer.

If comparing to MP3s that have a bunch of detail thrown away, one would
consider those to be 96 and 128 Kbps MP3s. 128Kbps is 1/11th the size of
the Redbook file it started out as. Of course this is over simplifying
to make a comparison. Wiki MP3 for a more detailed explanation.
