Wow - cool, now it works!!!
Somehow the SB3 got stuck initially but now, if I have Mac and SB3 in
standby (connected via WLAN) and I push the red power button on the
remote the following happens:

On the first push I get "can't connect to squeezecenter...."
on the second push I get "Waking up squeezecenter" and the Mac starts
up. However It seems that the Mac reacts too slowly, so the next I see 
again
"Can't connect to squeezecenter..."

When pushing the power button the third time SB3 becomes ready to
play!

Awesome - even if not yet really smooth.

Regarding the comments above: Yes, Apple hardware and OS can do this,
just tick "Wake for network access" in the OS 10.6 energy saving
settings. Seems that even the WLAN router needs to comply with the
requirements and the up to date equipment from Apple does, I have a
"Time capsule".
