I'm not sure I quite follow your original post. But first, playlists
are in fact list of TRACKS, so what you suggest is correct (a playlist
will always return a list of tracks as far as I know).

But there may be other approaches you can use. For example, on all your
wife's albums you can add a second genre tag (e.g., WIFE). Then use
browse by genre to view only those albums that have WIFE as part of
GENRE. You can use mp3tag to add the second genre (open all wife's
albums in mp3tag, sort by Genre, then within each Genre, add the WIFE
as a second genre.

For example, if your wife has ROCK as a genre on some of her albums.
Find all these, select them, and then edit the Genre tag. It would
currently be:
Rock. Change to "Rock\\Wife" (without the quotes) then save the files.
This should result in all your Wife's Rock genre files to also have a
second genre tag called Wife. You can browse by the genre wife and
find all her albums. You can get even fancier with erland's plugins
like dynamic playlist, custom browse, etc.

But it may also be that you want to have separate music libraries.
Check out the multi library plugin.
