I have soundcheck enabled in iTunes which is applied after ripping music. However, I also use iVolume which is a separate application that updates the iTunes soundcheck tag using the replaygain routines.
Ivolume also has the ability to do album based adjustments like you want as well as an overall adjustment to volume that you can set manually. Finally, I have sbs set to smart gain if I remember correctly.
