I think this is a great idea too.  One reason why our living-room is
still full of CDs is that I sometimes want to be able to get to the
liner notes easily (though to be honest, I rarely do).

Being limited to just the front cover (and often a poor-quality low-res
version of it) reminds me of the days when I used to buy cassettes. I'm
often disappointed at the paucity of information and artwork that comes
with audio downloads.

On a few rare occasions, I have scanned-in non-cover artwork and/or
liner notes, and kept those in the relevant album's folder.  But I
don't think I've ever used them! And I certainly haven't done anything
about making them more accessible. Just too lazy.

Sometimes I will look up info about an album on Wikipedia or
allmusic.com whilst listening; but that doesn't always exist, or
doesn't have the info I want (who's that guest trumpeter, for
example).

(Hmm, I guess being able to to launch web searches for an artist /
album / whatever might be useful... oh hang on, that's already there in
Firefox (albeit crude)!)
