No, that's true, you have to tap the cover to get the context menu.
I did not want to do a straight "cover-play" since in iPeng for iPad
there are cases where you need to tap a cover to open a menu and I
don't want to confuse people about things that could be destructive for
a playlist.
I did experiment with a dedicated "play all" button below the cover but
opinion in the beta was that it's generally more ugly than needed.

Out of curiosity: why do you use "play single tracks"? I mean: it only
makes a difference for "play" on single tracks and if you are playing
single tracks, does having the rest of the album in the playlist hurt?
Or do you build playlists so often that the "hold" on a track makes a
difference for starting a new one?
