See the wiki pages linked here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Category:Software_players. In
brief:

SoftSqueeze is a Java-based software SB that emulates the interface on
older SBs, such as SB3/Classic, Transporter, etc. It is currently being
maintained by the SB community.

Squeezeplay is a desktop (or laptop) implementation of the software
that runs on the SB Controller, Touch, and Radio. It is developed by
Logitech, but only as a development tool, and will probably never be
officially released -- it's beta forever.

squeezeslave is another SB community project that streams music from an
SB server. It has no graphical user interface, only commandline.

Note that sync'ing of software players is an inexact science, and
generally does not work perfectly. But some people get lucky.
Sometimes.
