Thanks folks for your suggestions. Seems what I needed to do is treat the Linux box as if it was a Windows box, and simply reboot it (I actually did so, and then discovered that that solved the problem). Thought for sure I'd restarted all of the relevant processes. Guess I must have missed one.
Back to having flac in the living room.
