The interpreter/compiler/hybrid/whatever no doubt has some RAM overhead of it's own. But I suspect the lions share of resource consumption is due to the actual perl code. If you strip function from one in order to move it to the other, the ram usage of the two will be greater than when it was monolithic, but hopefully nowhere near twice.
