Great to hear you got your property back. I wouldn't worry too much about the person who stole it - 'petty theft' or not he abused the trust which his customer had for him. How many other people has he ripped off before or would he rip off in the future if he had not been caught?
What a pity you had to actually do so much work yourself to get the police to take action but at least they did in the end.
