I'm running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 (Android 2.3.3) on a Motorola Droid. It may be a problem with the connection dropping or reestablishment like you said. This phone is also CDMA instead of GSM and that might be affecting the behavior as well.
You could probably simulate the problem by manually turning off WiFi, but it may not be the same as losing signal. The jumping song thing is understandable. I thought there might be an issue like that. I'll be happy to run a test version or whatever you might need to help you figure it out.
