At one time it was possible to mute via the Controller by holding both the VolDown and VolUp buttons simultaneously, but as I recall there were (sometimes?) problems taking it out of mute. Maybe it was exhibiting the same problem you describe with iPeng, ie, losing the negative mute value and changing it to 0.
