Yes, and you are probably aware how limited that is unless you can use
e.g. Twonkly's extensions to the DLNA standard. And I don't believe
here that Logitech is doing anything to extend it.

I know that theoretically the control point can be separate, however, a
DLNA control point takes FULL control of the renderer, that is: if you
take away the control point (e.g. because it's going to sleep) then the
player will play the rest of the song and that's it.
DLNA renderers don't have a concept like a playlist or their own state,
it's not like sending remote commands to the renderer, it's like the
renderer does absolutely NOTHING without the control point.

It's actually the same for the Squeezebox but in the Squeezebox worls,
the control point is part of the server and the "remote control" apps
and devices are just a user interface for the control point.

That's because TVs and "multimediaplayer" usually contain a control
point themselves but that CP usually requires a TV to be on for their
user interface. And there is no DLNA way to control another CP.

If the "stream" is internet radio: yes. If the stream is a song then
well, yes, you listen to a single song.

Or is crossfading for example done at the squeezeplayer or is it
happening in the server, or both even?

You could but then somebody would have to... well, let's see...

Yep. LMS would need a CP that could be controlled like a Squeezebox.
