I don't know how the Various Artist issue escaped detection for so long, but we were filtering all compilations out of the master album list completely. That said, were you able to browse to the compilation albums from the "Various Artists" entry at the top of the ARTIST list? This might be dependent on your server settings too, so if it's not configured to show on the server side, it won't show in Orange Squeeze either.
