I have over a hundred static playlists in my library.

I listen mostly to classical music. When I rip music, I 'dismantle' the
CD contents and store each piece in a separate folder that contains all
the movements for that piece played by that performer. I then store
these folders sorted first by composer, then by type of piece [sonatas,
concertos, symphonies, etc], then by specific piece, finally by specific
performance. Some folders have multiple subfolders [an opera with each
act] some have 30 or more tracks, some have only one track. Thus when
I use the Squeezebox, I never select individual tracks but only folders.

For my favorite CDs, I sometimes create a static playlist that
're-assembles' the CD by including all the pieces from the CD in their
original order. Most of my static playlists are of this sort, and I
never change them. But sometimes I assemble a 'concert' for an evening
by including the performances I want in the order I want, and this
becomes a static playlist. Some of these I keep for long periods, some
only for a few months, some get changed occcasionally by adding new
pieces or including a different performer.
