got it. I hadn't looked at this menu in a long time as I always use ipeng to sync. I'm back to my vortexbox appliance now (and no problems with sync). So in my case, it was clearly the dell laptop running LMS that was causing the problem. Nothing else was different. very odd.... (as that laptop is a fairly powerful modern laptop, running winXP).
