A microcomputer with Squeezeslave and a decent DAC seems to be the most logical alternative. Maybe Raspberry Pi? I just did a test on an old ATOM-powered laptop. Works fine, but the fan is rather annoying. Remote control is easy with Android or iOS but I think there might be a way to control it through IR. There's even a display option - whick I didn't check out.
All competitors seems to be either way to expensive or way too complicated to handle on a daily basis. No, I dont want to convert my music to some other format. No, I dont trust your hardware - you do the hifi stuff, I do the computers.
