If you want to play different things to different zones you'll need a SB player (hardware or software) at each zone. One server (containing music) can run LMS and provide the same (synched) or different music to each zone (player). This could be local music, internet streams, etc. You could consider Radios or Booms for some locations (built in speaker/amp) and a TOUCH for other locations (connected to preamp/amp/speakers). Keep in mind that one can use things like iphones, ipads, itouch with ipeng's playback feature (or ipad with squeezepad's playback feature) to turn an iThing into the equivalent of a SqueezeBox hardware player (just connect the ithing to a dock or other method of playing via speakers). There are also other things these days that can emulate a SB player (see threads on Rasberry pi, "replacement for under $30" etc.
Another thought is to consider a Vortexbox Appliance. This can be your PC running LMS (and DLNA, etc.) that holds your music and files. And the VB Appliance with soundcard can be setup to split VB PLAYER (built into the VB appliance) to 5 different zones (maybe even more with certain setups). So you wouldn't need as many (or any) hardware squeezebox players. You'd just need small amps (eg. T-amps) for each zone driving speakers in different places. And all this could be located in one central media cabinet with only Speaker wires needed from there to get to all your locations). All could be controlled from laptop, from smart phone, tablets, etc. And would work with internet when available or own music the rest of the time. I wouldn't rely on wifi for things if I'm building this.
