I don't think JS is going to budge on 256MB for GEN1 due to the additional layout complexity. As long as it doesn't get any less, (I think Erland said 128MB would be OK earlier in the thread, and I nearly choked on my coffee ;)), it will be OK. Having developed software exclusively for embedded devices for 5 years or so in a previous life, I know that the last thing you want to do is struggle for memory when you already have to accept the limited horsepower the CPU has to offer. (The idea of swapping to a SDCARD gives me the horrors.) 512MB would be nice and excessive for the stated purpose, but as long as it doesn't drop < 256MB, it'll be OK.
