John, I'm happy to you see you involved in this project. I received a
call from a friend while driving home about this post and had some time
to brain storm. I'm not a big fan of the one board fits all approach. I
feel that having modules with the desired output allows one to optimize
that output and you end up having a better product in the end compared
to trying to put everything into one board.

The brains of the device (computer board) should be made as simple as
possible with Ethernet input and USB and i2s output. The USB output is
located on the same side as the ethernet connector and affords easy
access to those who prefer a USB DAC or USB interface. The i2s output is
located opposite of the ethernet and USB connectors and would used in
combination with a module that would stack in the case. BTW the i2s
output could be generated from a second onboard USB signal patch using a
very good clock and clock power circuit. With this you now have the
basic frame work to build anything! I can make available modules from my
Rendu Network Player if you like the idea. I have an i2s to LVDS i2s
output module that can be used with W4S and PS Audio gear. I have an i2s
to Sabre analog output module with RCA output that can also be used to
drive headphones. I can also make a tricked out SPDIF output module.
Others can design modules as well...

Here are images of the modules;
