Update on the BeagleBone, I got the XMOS based board connected to the rest of the DAC and sure enough it plays music when connected to the BB. Again no pops or clicks, it's running high speed UAC2 async without any problems.
That seems pretty definitive to me that this hardware can talk to modern high speed USB DACs and do it well. Next I'm going to try Squeezelite.
