Just look at the Squeezebox Receiver which have a multi colored indicator on the front, even if it have a multi color indication there have been a lot of support issues for people who don't get it to work and doesn't understand how to troubleshoot it.
I believe some led's on the back could take care of some of this. Just being able to say: "try connect a network cable and verify that the light in the network connector lights up" will ease the troubleshooting a lot. However, I think a power led is more important than an ethernet led if we have to choose. Even on computers you have bios beeps that indicates what's wrong when the connection to the display doesn't work at boot.
