Yeah, I'm headed this direction, too. I have an old iPhone 4 with iPeng + in-player app that I've repurposed as a standalone player. I'm using either an Apple dock (so the iPhone has a good power source) + line out connected to self-powered speakers, or docking it in a Yamaha iPhone dock to use in the garage.
