The UE Radio cannot be "downgraded" (some would say upgraded) to be a Squeezebox Radio, simply because the firmware doesn't allow this. From what I've read, it would be possible if Logitech decided to let it happen.
Despite Logitech abandoning the line, the Squeeze platform is a long way from dead. There are several community projects on the go to keep it alive. there are a few very long threads on here about a new open hardware platform that some are working on, as well as a new OS and software.
