Ok I've just been trying this again and have observed the Squeezeplayer
network stats when the problem occurs: the 2nd number starts getting
lower...eventually hitting zero. At this stage the first number starts
falling and eventually hits zero - at that stage it goes into buffering
mode and stops playing for a few seconds. 
I did change the wifi router to a new channel (3), which according to
wi-fi analyzer isn't contended with other nearby devices, but this
doesn't seem to have helped.
If I use the version that keeps the screen on presumably I'll take quite
a battery hit? (or were you only suggesting that for diagnostic
purposes?)
