Thanks for all the detailed steps, I couldn't have asked for more! I
did all you said above with foobar2000, and am now listening to the
previous problem tracks with no problems at all :)

When I went for the SoX resampler I was a bit confused about which of
the options to pick, and opted for the "normal version 0.8.3". Since
all seems to be working well, I guess I didn't make too bad a choice.

One problem remains, likely till the next re-boot of my main PC. I
burned the problem tracks to a CD with Media Monkey Gold, and all seemed
well. But Windows Media Player produced only silence, and the 'eject'
command produced an error message. Pressing the eject button on the CD
drive didn't work either, so the CD is going to have to stay in the
drawer till the next re-boot! And I thought that was going to be easier
than foobar...

Squeezebox Duet digital into Yamaha RX-V2700 and Jamo speakers; analogue
into Speakercraft MZC-66 for whole house system. Library is mostly FLAC,
on external USB drive; Squeezecenter 7.7 running on VortexBox (built on
an elderly Dell PC). Ethernet between Squeezebox and PC; controller
uses wireless via router.
