This wiki article indicates that native FLAC support was not introduced until the SB2: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox2. The lack of native FLAC support in the SB1 and SliMP3 may be invisible to many users because the server will transcode FLAC to MP3 when it sees the player is a SB1 or SliMP3 and cannot handle FLAC.
