Thank you, I have found the offending software update and have deleted it. I have also replaced my original Iomega drive with a G Technology 4Tb one and it's certainly quieter - not sure if it's going to be faster as it also seems to go into "sleep" mode when not in use. Anyway, I think I now have an good stable system and I hope to enjoy listening to lots of music. Thanks to everyone who contributed to helping this happen!
