AFAIK, Squeezeplug is primarily a server, with an option to include a
player. You can make a standalone player like a Squeezebox with a
Raspberry Pi + Squeezelite. I've done it and it works fine, with the
following caveats:

1. The Raspberry Pi's onboard audio is of rather poor quality. You'd
need to hook up an external DAC to get decent results. And that means
using either HDMI (which I've not tried) or USB. The Pi's USB subsystem
is known to be rather flaky. Whether any particular USB DAC works can be
hit-and-miss. I used a cheap USB-to-SPDIF converter based on the TI
PCM2704 chip (typically available on eBay for about $15) and it works,
but with some suspicion that it's not quite perfect.

2. Synchronization with other Squeezeboxes is not as good as with the
hardware players. I found it to be acceptable where the players weren't
obviously in earshot of one another, but not with them having
overlapping coverage.

I've now abandoned the Pi as a Squeezebox. My advice would be to
consider a Wandboard running CSOS rather than a Pi, which from all
accounts seems to be a much more robust platform.
