For a DIY'er it is not a big deal. For a company it is a very big deal
because the future is unsure and there is not guaranteed support.

It's unsure, unless they decide not only to take advantage of the free software provided by some guys out there, but to contribute to it, helping to keep it alive.

Bringing a product to market is very time consuming and expensive.
That's why no commercial company will ever build a product based upon
LMS.

There are such products. None I'd know of hugely popular or successful in the mass market. But there are (mostly expensive) commercial products based on LMS with thousands of installations.
