Ok here's the tl;dr for those coming to the party late.

The exec summary: All is well, replacement feeds exist but you need a
helper plugin.

Step 1: Update Player plugin's menu with new feeds. Details here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?53229-Announce-BBCiPlayer-Plugin-%28UK-only%29&p=807276&viewfull=1#post807276

Step 2: These new feeds are in Apple HLS form, so you need to install
the PlayHLS plugin
Details in the link quoted above.

Step 3: PlayHLS requires ffmpeg. This is on most unix systems already,
but if you have a Debian based system (eg Ubuntu) ffmpeg is unlikely to
be present as it was replaced by avconv.
There are two solutions that I've used successfully, your preference as
to which of the following you use.
a) install a ffmpeg binary from here http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/ to
somewhere on your path like /usr/local/bin
Note the extension on these archives is incorrect as they are straight
tar files not compressed-tars.
b) install avconv from the libav-tools package, and create a symbolic
link called ffmpeg to avconv.
Note this package is incorrectly referred to as libavconv-tool in some
posts.

As ever YMMV, but hopefully you the above will reassure and time you
some time.
