I am having the EXACT same problem as Shifty. I've tried all the same command line options with all the exact same responses.
The service is listed but not active. I installed SlimServer on my laptop and it runs fine, but it hangs on my desk top. Both Dells running XP. Both with similar software suites. At first it also hung on my laptop. I had to reinstall it twice on the Laptop, but it's running fine now. I've downloaded a new executable and reinstalled it a dozen times. Each time I've uninstalled and rebooted prior to trying again. I've rebooted after installation as well. I'm running ZoneAlarm firewall, when Slim server tray icon starts up I can see I/O activity at Zone Alarm but I never get the cue from Zone Alarm that SlimServer is asking to accesss the internet or wants to act as a server. Both cues came up on the laptop and slimserver is listed in the programs list of ZoneAlarm on the laptop. I've shutdown both the firewall and anti-virus software, and even uninstalled Music Match in case there was a conflict (though there is none on the Laptop). I've also run Adaware and a virus scan. I'm using SoftSqueeze on my laptop until my Squeezebox arrives.
