You do not necessary loose display and IR remote. There are plenty of
displays for PI and other boards that work fine. 
As for IR, you can use a FLIRC dongle to control your RPI Squeezebox,
even with an original Squeezebox remote. 
Just have a look in the 3rd party hardware section of this forum.
