According to the hardware specs ( https://web.archive.org/web/20090221124647/http://slimdevices.com:80/pi_receiver.html ) , the SB has auto receiver polarity detection - this has been reported as auto MDIX which was a HP specific term. I think SB receiver can auto detect direct vs crossover cable - there is unlikely to be any harm in trying as long as there is nothing strange such as POE.
However if you are worried about noise ..
