Using LMS to resize artwork is enforced when running LMS in --nomysqueezebox mode. Therefore it's little surprising they behave the same.
I guess there's a bug in the app code which mess up relative vs. absolute paths. Or where it incorrectly handles resizing, eg. trying to send the imagproxy URL to mysqueezebox.com etc. Whatever it is: it won't be fixed...
