Well, you have a real can of worms there.:p

First off, you mention that the device has been playing up recently.

There are two main causes for this, if you search the forum. This is one

I have run LMS on a windows 7 computer without any problem and without
using the compatibility mode.

This is only general advice as I don't have a Classic

First off all check if it is on the network.

Your router web page will have a page showing attached devices, mine
looks a bit like this

I would later look to installing the most recent LMS version

I just download the .exe and right click > install as administrator.
