I've been using Ubuntu Server on my headless HP Microserver for some years and am very happy with it.
A few weeks ago I did a clean install of Ubuntu Server (because I messed up an upgrade) and it was pretty straightforward. >From memory, the only things I did afterwards (apart from installing LMS) were to set a fixed IP address for the server, installed Webmin (so I could access it from a Windows PC) and installed smartmontools. Am happy to help anyone, though I am far from an expert.
