This is adhoc observation without any testing.  I use DBpoweramp with
secure rip setting.  I have noticed on relatively new CDs, the rip speed
is fast, but it can be, but not always, slower on older CDs without any
scratches.  On these older CDs, I almost always get a secure rip.  (When
I have not gotten a secure rip, it is one track and I notice the CD has
scratches.)    I thought it might be degradation of the CD over time.  I
have not had d6jg's experience with the entire CD going bad.  

However, it is well known the writable CDs are not archive quality and
will degrade over time.
