First, I can sympathize your frustration when the computer just does not
seem to work right. I have been having a lot of unrelated problems with
MS Outlook..

What I can say is, I know nothing about linux and I successfully
installed PcP to run just LMS. I connected a USB drive to the Pi. I
use windows10 to copy files to the hard drive connected to the Pi which
requires samba. I did not run the squeezelite feature. I have been
very happy with the PcP.
I followed the items in the following documentation.
https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/
Which you probably have read, but I suggest reading it again, before
repeating the steps.

You may have a problem creating the SD card. As someone mentioned this
is NOT simply copying the extracted PcP *.img file onto the card.
I used the following for creating the SD card.
https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/burn_pcp_onto_a_sd_card/windows/usbimager/

Plug the Pi using a ethernet cable into the router, not the computer.

Finally, follow the synatax carefully. I did copy and paste as much as
possible.
