There are two stages in WiFi connection. First is the SSID connection to the WiFi Access Point or Router and second is the acquisition of IP address from DHCP server and connection to the network subnet. If you attempt to give the Pi a static IP address you simply will not be able to tell whether it is working or not or more accurately when it fails which bit you should troubleshoot. Its fairly common for WiFi to be up but the client cant receive an IP address for some reason or other.
