The consumers you're talking about buy into high-end buds and hi-res streaming because they believe it's what they should do, but they wouldn't recognise good sound quality if it smacked them in the mouth. Indeed, they are now so used to hypercompressed trash that it's what they think good sound quality is. Even today's crop of young mastering engineers seem to have drunk the kool-aid. "Everything louder than everything else" is the new dogma.
