With all the talk of NASes and Linux servers for SlimServer, I checked into something I've played with in the past, ClarkConnect: http://www.clarkconnect.com/developer/overview/
It's a Linux distro designed to turn a PC into a server/firewall. In the past I used ClarkConnect as a firewall. It's turned into a server now. Anyway SlimServer not only runs on it, it's INCLUDED with it: http://www.clarkconnect.com/developer/roadmap/detail.php?id=103 You could either install a Linux CD ripper and a CD-ROM into the CC box and rip CDs directly, or rip them on a Windows PC and put them in the CC box, and you'd be all set. I have an AMD K6-2/400 with motherboard and 192 MB memory lying around gathering dust. I could make a CC box with more memory and (say) a 200 GB drive and it would probably be faster and cheaper than a NAS device. Plus it could function as a firewall for my network. Hmm...may not be that cheap! I should get the maximum amount of memory the motherboard will support, 3 X 256 MB. PC100/133 is quite expensive, 3 X 256 MB Crucial would be $178.17 US. I'd need a 200-250 GB HDD for ~$130 CDN and an Antec case/PS for ~$75 CDN. I have spare parts for everything else.
