Actually using the external ins, you have full
volume control over the SL/SR, equally the same as
everything else. You may or may not have tone
control. You might have some balance controls.
But you made me realize that the volume control
will be one big master for all amplification. So
yes, it would be better to use the SB volume
control, and since you're using the analogue
outputs you won't lose anything.
Note that all 5.1- and 6.1-receivers have
6-channel external inputs by definition. But *not
all* 7.1-channel receivers have 8-channel external
inputs (some have 6-channel), so it would be best
to check.
As a bonus, you can still use the DAC in the
receiver if you want. If you have a *main* room
that you listen to your SB in, connect your SB
digitally as well as analog to the external in.
Put the receiver in STEREO or DIRECT mode. The
main room speakers will work just fine and the
other speakers will remain silent. You can also
set the receiver to ALL CHANNEL STEREO mode to
have all the speakers output the same material in
stereo this way.
For anyone wondering, the external inputs are
legacy connections designed for outboard Dolby
Digital or DTS decoders that fell out of favour 10
years ago. Now they are for SACD/DVD-A that
cannot be sent via S/PDIF.
