The squeezebox needs slimserver to be running unless you are listening to the squeezenetwork, so you can't turn off the computer even if you are using a networked HDD.
Slimserver is the brains behind the squeezebox. When you tell the squeezebox to play a song, the server starts streaming the song. The squeezebox receives the stream from the server and converts it to analog to send to your amplifier.
